ALERT: Change in plans

ALERT: Change in plans

30 May, 2008

Please take note that we are NOT GATHERING at Dataran Merdeka to walk to the NPC. This was decided in discussions with the police and the organising committee on 29 May. Participants are kindly advised to head to the National Press Club on Jalan Tangsi (off Jalan Parlimen) for the dialogue which is scheduled to start at 10:30 with the Minister in Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim. Since refreshments have already been ordered for 9:30 am, feel free to come early to partake of them.

For those driving, there are only 25 parking spots around the NPC area. You may want to park across near the Royal Selangor Club, the St. Mary’s church or the underground parking at Dataran Merdeka, but please take note that the Dataran Merdeka road will be closed, so you will have to use the other entrance (U-turn at the roundabout below the Jalan Kinabalu flyover). Those who are commuting might consider taking the Putra-LRT to the Masjid Jamek station and it is a short walk to NPC, or the KTM Komuter to the Bank Negara stop.

See you at NPC on Sunday!

The revised program for the morning is as follows…

09:30 am Participants arrive, refreshments served
10:35 am Welcome speech by NPC Chairman, Mokhtar
10:45 am Speech by NUJ President, Norila Daud
10:55 am Speech on behalf of Walk Organisers, V Gayathry
11:00 am Keynote address by Minister in Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim
11:30 am Dialogue
12:00 noon Special announcements: Reading of May 3 Memorandum, Joint Resolution by organisers
12:30 pm Press Conference

Walk For Media Freedom ~ Let Have A Walk Together

Previously, I missed a few Walks (Walk for Justice, BERSIH...etc) that I supposed to be there for at least 2 reasons:
i) to show my support and stand in upholding the fundamental liberties and rights under the Federal Constitution.
ii) for my thesis field works research (My topic is Right to Assembly)

This is the latest Walk that would be carried out this Sunday from Dataran Merdeka to National Press Club. I will be there...Who wanna join me?

Democracy in Malaysia
is evolving and maturing.

Growth means change and growth often calls for one to leave behind zones of comfort and venture into unknown places. While some changes are slower to materialise, other changes that we can observe already taking place are truly refreshing.

One of those changes which will profoundly and positively impact democratic growth is the move towards Information Freedom.

From 9 am on Sunday the 1st of June 2008, Malaysian journalists and their fellow citizens will, together, demonstrate their keen desire for Media Freedom by taking a symbolic Walk at Dataran Merdeka.

To avoid problems with security laws, there will be NO PUBLIC GATHERING. Instead, participants are being asked to arrive on their own in ones and twos, show their respect to the National Flag at the Dataran, and then proceed immediately to the National Press Club which is just around the corner (location map and suggested walking route to be provided). Those who wish to do so are invited to wear something yellow, a reflection that this is a People’s Activity.

Underlining the importance of this initiative, YB Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has kindly consented to deliver the keynote address, explaining his views about the road to Media Freedom. Datuk Zaid is a Minister in the PM’s Department and the de facto Law Minister. From practically the first day of his appointment, he has said and done things that have pleased the people, especially the legal community, and has conveyed a very positive feeling about what he intends to accomplish.

Datuk Zaid has two requests - that journalists turn up in large numbers and that this program calls for ethics and accountability as much as it calls for freedom. Since this is the very thrust of this campaign and exactly what we are calling upon the writer community to deliver, it looks like we are very much in sync.

While we, the organisers, can direct the theme and thrust of the event, journalist participation will be determined by organisations such as the NUJ, the NPC and the various media groups. We look forward to strong support from them. This is an opportunity that they should not miss out on. Please pass the word around and tell every journalist whom you know about this event.

As to ordinary citizens and bloggers, here is your opportunity to show that you desire Media Freedom. Come and take the Walk with your journalist friends/colleagues and show your solidarity with them. We can help to move our nation forward on the road to civil liberties.

The program for the morning is as follows…

9 – 9:45am Walkers arrive individually at the National Flag at Dataran Merdeka, show their respect, and then proceed immediately to the National Press Club. Please DO NOT gather anywhere at the Dataran. If there are any blockades, simply avoid those and find another route to the NPC. No confrontation and no heroics please.
10:00 am Welcoming address by the organisers
10:15 am Keynote address by Datuk Zaid Ibrahim
10:45am Sharing by participants followed by Q&A
11:30am Reading of the 1st June Statement
11:40am Re-reading of the 3rd May Memorandum
11:50am Launch of the signature campaign endorsing the 3rd May Memorandum
12:00 noon Participants take the Pledge Resolution on Media Freedom

See you there on Sunday 1st June 2008

The History of Middle Finger

Im sure there are a lots of History u heard before but this HIS--story maybe not yet discovered by you.. maybe it is a norm for u to show it but before you show it next time think of this blog-post ya.. im sure this history is unbooked in any history book around the world.

Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English Soldiers.

Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future.

This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of the drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" or "pluck yew".

Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying:
"See, we can still pluck yew!"

Since "pluck yew" is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentals fricative "F", and thus the words often used in conjunction with the One~Finger~Salute!

It is also because of the pheasant feather on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird". It is STILL an appropriate salute to the French today.

After read this..
And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing?!!!

CLK(cute little Kancil).
